Chapter 9

The air in the house had grown increasingly heavy over the past few months. I couldn't quite put my finger on the exact moment the shift occurred, but the warmth that once defined our home had been entirely replaced by a sterile, suffocating coldness. Victoria walked through the hallways with the pristine elegance of a queen inspecting her domain, her sharp heels clicking against the hardwood floors like the ticking of a relentless metronome. Lily, on the other hand, had become a ghost in her own home. She was fifteen, an age that was supposed to be filled with loud music, slammed doors, and constant chatter. Instead, my daughter had perfected the devastating art of making herself completely invisible. I sat in my study, staring blindly at the quarterly financial reports on my desk, my mind replaying the deeply unsettling interaction at the dinner table the previous evening. Lily had reached for the salt, her sleeve pulling back just enough to reveal a dark, fading bruise on her forearm. When I asked her about it, her eyes immediately darted toward Victoria before she mumbled a pathetic excuse about tripping in the school gymnasium. Victoria had smoothly interjected, laughing off Lily's clumsiness and seamlessly changing the subject to our upcoming vacation to Aspen. I had let it go. I had swallowed the lie because it was easier than confronting the terrifying alternative. But as I sat alone in the quiet study, the crushing weight of my own deliberate ignorance began to suffocate me. I was failing her. The woman I had married, the woman who had promised to love Lily as her own, was slowly and systematically dimming my daughter’s light. I stood up from my desk, the sudden resolve hardening in my chest like iron. I was going to find out exactly what was happening in this house when I wasn't looking, even if it meant tearing apart the flawless illusion Victoria had so carefully constructed. The blindfold was finally coming off, and I was terrified of what I was about to see.
