Chapter 23

The jury deliberations lasted less than four hours. When they filed back into the courtroom, the tension in the air was thick and completely suffocating. I held Lily’s hand tightly in mine, silently praying for the justice she so deeply deserved.
"Has the jury reached a verdict?" the judge asked, his voice echoing loudly in the quiet room.
"We have, Your Honor," the foreperson replied clearly. "On the charge of felony child endangerment, we find the defendant, Victoria Sterling... guilty. On the charge of unlawful imprisonment, we find the defendant... guilty."
Victoria collapsed back into her wooden chair, burying her face in her trembling hands as the reality of a decade in federal prison finally crashed down upon her. There was no more money, no more elegant galas, and no more power. She had lost the family she tried to ruthlessly control, and she had lost her freedom in the process.
As the bailiffs escorted a weeping Victoria out of the courtroom in heavy handcuffs, Lily let out a long, shuddering breath. The heavy, dark cloud that had hung over her entire adolescence was permanently lifted.
We walked out of the courthouse and into the bright, warm afternoon sun. I looked at my daughter, seeing the profound sense of peace settling over her beautiful features.
"How do you feel?" I asked gently, opening the car door for her.

"I feel incredibly light, Dad," Lily smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that I hadn't seen since she was a little girl. "I feel like we can finally just live our lives without constantly looking over our shoulders."
"That's exactly what we are going to do," I promised. The nightmare was officially over, and the rest of our lives was finally beginning.
