Chapter 14

I drove Lily straight to the emergency room at the nearest pediatric hospital. The triage nurses took one look at her pale, shivering form and rushed her into an examination room. I sat in the sterile waiting area for two agonizing hours, my hands covered in my face, completely consumed by the crushing weight of my own failures. I was a successful businessman who could spot a corporate lie from a mile away, yet I had allowed a monster to systematically destroy my daughter right under my own roof.

When the attending physician finally called me into the room, his expression was incredibly grave.

"Your daughter is stable, but she is suffering from moderate hypothermia and severe, prolonged malnutrition," the doctor stated, looking at me with a mixture of concern and distinct suspicion. "We also documented several deep contusions on her lower back and ribs that are entirely inconsistent with a simple fall. Dr. Carter, as a mandatory reporter, I am legally obligated to involve Child Protective Services when I see these types of injuries."

"Please, involve them immediately," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "I want everything documented. Every single bruise. Every ounce of weight she has lost. The woman who did this to her is currently sitting in my house, and I am going to make absolutely sure she spends the rest of her miserable life behind bars."

The doctor’s expression softened slightly, realizing I was not the perpetrator, but a desperate father waking up to a nightmare. He nodded and handed me a clipboard with the medical release forms.

I walked over to the hospital bed where Lily was sleeping peacefully, hooked up to a warm saline IV. The color was slowly returning to her cheeks. I sat beside her, gently holding her fragile hand, vowing to the memory of her mother that I would dedicate every remaining second of my life to healing the wounds I had blindly allowed to be inflicted.
