Chapter 22

The criminal trial of Victoria Sterling was the most emotionally exhausting experience of my entire life, but it was absolutely necessary for our closure. Seven months after the grocery store incident, we sat in a cold, sterile courtroom. Victoria sat at the defense table, wearing a conservative grey suit, attempting to play the role of a misunderstood, wrongly accused stepmother.
The prosecution’s case was incredibly meticulous and completely devastating. They presented the medical records detailing Lily’s malnourishment and bruises. They called the pediatric emergency room doctor to the stand, who testified definitively that the injuries were consistent with prolonged physical and psychological abuse.
But the most powerful moment of the entire trial came when Lily herself took the witness stand. She was sixteen now, stronger and far more resilient than the terrified girl I had found in the basement. I watched from the front row, my heart bursting with immense pride, as my daughter swore to tell the truth.
Victoria’s highly paid defense attorney tried to rattle Lily, aggressively questioning her memories and suggesting she was a rebellious teenager prone to exaggeration.
"Isn't it true, Lily, that you frequently locked yourself in the basement to avoid doing your homework?" the defense attorney sneered condescendingly.

Lily sat perfectly straight, her eyes locking directly onto Victoria. "No. Victoria locked the door from the outside. She told me that I was a useless burden, and that if I made a single sound, she would convince my father to send me to an abusive boarding school permanently. She wanted to erase me, so she could be the only woman in my father's life."
The absolute, unvarnished truth in Lily's voice resonated through the entire courtroom, silencing the arrogant lawyer completely. Victoria looked down at the table, realizing that the girl she tried to break had ultimately destroyed her.
