Chapter 24

With the trial entirely behind us, our focus shifted exclusively to healing and rebuilding our future. I scaled back my hours at the corporate office, delegating responsibilities so I could be present for Lily every single day. We continued with weekly therapy sessions, which proved to be an invaluable tool in unpacking the deep psychological scars Victoria had left behind.
During one particularly breakthrough session, Lily finally opened up about the immense guilt she had carried.
"I always thought that if I was just a better daughter, quieter, smarter, she wouldn't hate me so much," Lily admitted, staring at the floor of the therapist's office. "She made me feel like I was a terrible inconvenience in my own home."
"Victoria's cruelty was entirely about her own deep insecurities, Lily," the therapist gently explained. "She was intimidated by the pure, unconditional love your father has for you and for your biological mother. Her abuse was a reflection of her darkness, not a reflection of your worth."

I reached over and grabbed Lily’s hand, squeezing it firmly. "You have always been the absolute best part of my life, Lily. There is nothing you could ever do to make you an inconvenience to me. You are my entire world."
Lily looked up at me, tears shimmering in her eyes, and squeezed my hand back. That day marked a massive turning point. The lingering self-doubt that Victoria had meticulously planted in Lily’s mind finally began to wither and die, replaced by a fierce, undeniable understanding of her own immense value. She was finally starting to see herself the way I had always seen her: bright, capable, and profoundly important.
