Chapter 26

Lily’s senior year of high school arrived faster than I could have ever anticipated. She had blossomed into an incredibly intelligent, compassionate young woman. The adversity she had survived didn't make her hard or bitter; instead, it made her deeply empathetic to the struggles of others. She decided she wanted to study child psychology in college, determined to use her own horrific experiences to help other children escape the darkness of abuse.
She threw herself into her studies and extracurricular activities with a fierce passion. She joined the debate team, volunteered at a local youth shelter, and maintained straight A's despite the rigorous coursework. I attended every single event, sitting proudly in the front row, cheering louder than anyone else in the room.
As the college acceptance letters began arriving in the mail, the reality that she would soon be leaving the nest hit me with a profound, bittersweet ache. One evening, she came running down the stairs, waving a thick, glossy envelope in the air.
"I got in, Dad!" she screamed, jumping up and down in the foyer. "I got accepted into the early action program at the university!"
I caught her in a massive hug, spinning her around the hallway. "I knew you would, sweetheart! I am so incredibly proud of you. You have worked so hard for this."
May you like
"We worked hard for this," Lily corrected me, pulling back and looking me directly in the eyes. "I wouldn't be here, doing any of this, if you hadn't come back for me that night. You saved my life, Dad."
"And you saved mine, Lily," I replied honestly, choking back the immense wave of emotion. "You gave me a reason to be a better man."
