Chapter 9 - Blood and Silk
|
A thick, blinding cloud of white chemical foam exploded from the ceiling vents, instantly filling the penthouse with an impenetrable fog.
The Moretti hitmen began coughing wildly, blinded and disoriented.
"Move!" Dominic yelled, grabbing Clara’s hand.
They used the confusion to push forward, slipping past the choking assassins. Dominic moved like a ghost in the fog, neutralizing targets with brutal, silent precision.
They reached the service elevator. Dominic punched in an override code, and the doors slid open. They piled inside, accompanied by two surviving guards.
As the doors closed, a Moretti hitman lunged through the gap. He raised his gun, aiming directly at Clara.
Before Dominic could react, Clara raised the compact pistol and pulled the trigger.
The recoil jarred her wrist, but the bullet hit the assassin square in the shoulder. He dropped his weapon, screaming in pain, as the elevator doors sealed shut, severing him from his target.
Clara dropped the gun, her chest heaving, staring at her shaking hands.
Dominic pulled her into his chest, burying his face in her hair. "You did perfectly. You are amazing."
"I just shot a man," Clara whispered, the shock setting in.
"You just survived," Dominic corrected firmly. "And now, we end this."
The elevator plunged to the subterranean parking garage. A convoy of armored SUVs was waiting, engines roaring. They piled into the back of the lead car, tearing out of the garage and disappearing into the chaotic Chicago traffic.
"Where are we going?" Clara asked, wiping sweat from her forehead.
"To the one place they won't look," Dominic said, pulling out his encrypted phone. "And then, I am going to find the man who ordered this, and I am going to tear his heart out of his chest."

He dialed a number.
"Leo," Dominic said, speaking to his underboss. "We were hit. The penthouse is gone. Rally the men. I want the Moretti family wiped off the map by midnight. And find Victoria Montgomery. I want her alive."
