Chapter 20 - The Unseen Horizon

|

Later that night, the estate was quiet.

Clara sat in her private office, reviewing the decrypted files from the leather-bound ledger. The amount of power contained in those pages was staggering. With this information, Dominic was virtually untouchable by law enforcement or rival syndicates.

She smiled, feeling a profound sense of peace. The storm had passed.

Dominic walked into the office, wearing loose sweatpants and a t-shirt, looking relaxed and devastatingly handsome. He carried two glasses of wine, handing one to her before leaning over to kiss her neck.

"You work too hard, Mrs. Russo," he murmured, his hands resting on her waist.

"Just securing our future, Mr. Russo," she smiled, leaning back into his embrace.

"Our future is secure," Dominic promised, turning her chair around so she faced him. "I want to take you to Italy. Just the two of us. No guards, no syndicate business. Just a husband and his wife."

"I would love that," Clara whispered, pulling him down for a deep, lingering kiss.

For the first time in years, the crushing weight of survival was gone. They had won. They had each other, and they had the power to protect their peace.

But as Dominic carried her out of the office and toward their bedroom, Clara’s encrypted computer monitor suddenly flared to life.

A new, heavily encrypted file had bypassed her firewalls. It sat in the center of the screen, flashing with a red icon.

The file name was simple: The Global Syndicate: Phase One.

Clara didn't see it. She was lost in the arms of her husband, completely unaware that the local wars of Chicago were merely a training ground. A new, international threat had just logged on, and the true battle for their survival was only just beginning.
