Chapter 8 - The Safehouse Attack

|
The attack came at 2:00 PM.
Clara was sitting at the kitchen island of the penthouse, drinking coffee and reviewing the financial files on Victoria’s family, searching for vulnerabilities. Dominic was in the adjacent study, on a secure line with his capos.
Suddenly, the reinforced glass of the penthouse windows shattered inward with a deafening crash.
"Get down!" a guard screamed.
Clara dove to the floor, covering her head as a hail of bullets tore through the living room, shredding the expensive furniture.
Dominic burst out of the study, a heavy assault rifle in his hands. He didn't look panicked; he looked like a soldier executing a drill. He laid down a wall of suppressing fire toward the shattered windows, forcing the snipers on the adjacent rooftop to take cover.
"Clara! Crawl to me!" Dominic roared.
Clara scrambled across the floor on her hands and knees, glass slicing into her palms. Dominic grabbed her by the belt of her robe and hauled her into the fortified concrete hallway, shielding her body with his own.
"They breached the elevators," his head of security yelled over the gunfire. "Moretti hit squad. About twenty men."
"They brought twenty men to kill one accountant?" Clara gasped, clutching Dominic’s shirt.
"They didn't come for an accountant," Dominic said, his eyes turning to ice. "They came for my Queen. And they are going to die for it."
Dominic pressed a sleek, compact pistol into Clara’s hands.
"Safety is off. If anyone comes around that corner who isn't wearing my family crest, you pull the trigger and you don't stop. Understand?"
"I understand," Clara nodded, her hands shaking but her grip firm.
The sound of heavy boots echoed from the stairwell. The Moretti men were pushing up.
"Hold the line!" Dominic commanded his men.
The penthouse erupted into an absolute bloodbath. Dominic fought like a demon, his movements precise and lethal. Clara stayed behind him, watching the man she loved defend her life with terrifying efficiency.
But there were too many of them. The guards were getting pinned down.

"We need a distraction," Clara yelled over the noise. "The fire suppression system! It's chemically based, not water!"
Dominic looked at her, understanding instantly. He aimed his rifle at the ceiling and shot the main suppression valve.
