Chapter 5 - Uninvited Guests

|
The news of Falcone’s public humiliation spread through the Chicago underworld like wildfire.
Clara had proven she wasn't just a trophy or a pawn; she was a lethal weapon in Dominic’s arsenal. Her mind was sharper than any blade his enforcers carried.
But not everyone was intimidated.
Two days later, Clara was sitting in her private office when her assistant buzzed the intercom.
"Mrs. Russo? There is a Victoria Montgomery here to see you. She says she has an appointment."
Clara frowned. "I don't have any appointments. Send her away."
"I tried, ma'am. She refuses to leave. She says it's about your mother."
Clara’s blood ran completely cold.
Her mother was in a high-security, private care facility for advanced dementia. Dominic had arranged the security himself. Nobody was supposed to know she was there.
"Send her in," Clara said, her voice shaking slightly.
The door opened, and Victoria glided in, wearing a pristine white designer suit. She looked like a predator circling wounded prey.
"Nice office," Victoria purred, running a gloved hand over the back of a leather chair. "A bit masculine, but I suppose that suits you."
"How do you know about my mother?" Clara demanded, skipping the pleasantries.
Victoria smiled, sitting down uninvited. "My family still has connections, Clara. Dominic might have exiled me, but he can't erase my network. I know about the facility in Oak Park. I know about the nurses."
"If you touch her, Dominic will kill you."
"Oh, I'm not going to touch her," Victoria laughed. "But the Moretti family might."
Clara’s stomach plummeted. The Morettis were Dominic’s oldest and most violent rivals.
"The Morettis want Dominic's port contracts," Victoria explained smoothly. "I simply traded them some information in exchange for a percentage of the profits. Information like the exact location of his new, beloved wife's vulnerable mother."

Victoria leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with malice.
"You have forty-eight hours to pack your bags and leave Chicago forever. Divorce him. Disappear. If you don't, your mother is going to have a very tragic, very fatal accident."
