Chapter 18 - The Race to the Facility

|

"Get dressed," Dominic commanded, moving with terrifying speed. "We have to get to the Wisconsin facility right now."

"Victoria is in exile," Clara said, pulling on her clothes. "She can't hurt us."

"Victoria isn't the threat anymore," Dominic said grimly. "Whoever sent that text knows about the ledgers. They are coming for your mother to get them."

They didn't take the cars. They took Dominic’s private helicopter, flying through the dark night sky toward the secure compound in the woods.

Clara’s heart was in her throat the entire flight. If those ledgers contained the syndicate's deepest secrets, her mother was holding a ticking time bomb.

They landed on the facility's helipad just as the sun was beginning to rise.

Marco and a team of heavily armed guards met them on the tarmac.

"The perimeter is secure, Boss," Marco reported. "No sign of a breach."

"Take us to her room," Dominic ordered.

They rushed through the sterile hallways of the medical facility. Clara pushed open the door to her mother’s room.

Her mother was sleeping peacefully in her bed, completely unharmed.

Clara let out a massive sigh of relief, sagging against the doorframe. Dominic put a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"We need to find those ledgers, Clara," Dominic whispered. "Did she have anything personal with her when she was admitted?"

"Just a few boxes of old clothes and trinkets," Clara said, moving quietly to the small closet in the room.

She pulled down a dusty cardboard box labeled 'Memories'. She sifted through old photographs, knitted sweaters, and outdated medical paperwork.

At the very bottom of the box, wrapped in an old quilt, was a heavy, leather-bound book.

Clara pulled it out. The pages were filled with handwritten codes, offshore account numbers, and the names of corrupt federal judges and politicians.

"This is it," Dominic said, his eyes widening. "This is the master ledger. With this, we control half the government."

"But who sent the text?" Clara asked, looking at the book. "Who wanted us to find it?"

Before Dominic could answer, Clara’s phone buzzed again.
