Chapter 6 - A Visitor in the Rain

|
At 2:00 A.M., rain began to hammer against the thin windowpane of Room 114.
Margot sat at the small laminate desk, taking meticulous notes in a black notebook. She had mapped out the entire flow of capital from Trevor’s primary investment fund into Briana’s shell company over the last eighteen months.
A low, rhythmic knock sounded at her door.
Three short taps, followed by a pause, then one heavy knock.
Margot did not panic. She quietly closed her laptop, reached into her coat pocket, and took out a heavy silver pen with a sharp steel tip.
She walked over to the door and glanced through the peephole.
Standing in the dim yellow light of the exterior corridor was a broad-shouldered man in a drenched wool overcoat. It was Leo—the quiet enforcer who had been standing behind Elias Carver at Marble Room earlier that evening.
"Miss Carver," Leo’s deep voice carried through the wood. "Mr. Carver would like a word. He’s sitting in the car."
Margot unlocked the door and pulled it open halfway. "It’s two in the morning, Leo."
"Mr. Carver doesn't sleep much when business is unfinished," Leo replied politely, holding a large black umbrella over his head. "He said to tell you that Trevor Whitfield just filed an emergency injunction with Judge Miller to seize your personal laptop."
Margot’s eyes narrowed slightly. "How does Elias know that?"

"Because Judge Miller called Mr. Carver first," Leo said with a slight, knowing smile. "Are you coming?"
Margot looked back at her small motel room, then picked up her laptop bag and stepped out into the freezing rain.
