Chapter 19 - Reclaiming the Waterfront

|
Six weeks later.
The early morning sun broke over the Lake Erie horizon, illuminating the bustling construction site of the East Bank development.
Heavy machinery roared to life. Cranes moved massive steel girders through the crisp spring air, and teams of certified engineers inspected the newly poured, high-density concrete footings along the river wall.
Margot stood on the wooden viewing platform overlooking the waterfront, wearing a hard hat and a high-visibility vest over her tailored suit.
A brand-new sign stood at the entrance of the construction site, painted in bold silver lettering:
CARVER WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT — LEAD CONSULTANT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: MARGOT CARVER.
Her phone buzzed. It was a notification from her bank: First municipal contract payment cleared.
She had her money back. She had her career back. And Trevor Whitfield was currently sitting in a federal detention facility awaiting trial, his assets seized by the state.
Footsteps sounded on the wooden stairs behind her.
Elias Carver stepped onto the platform, holding two paper cups of hot coffee. He handed one to Margot, standing beside her as they watched the workers below.

"The site looks clean, Margot," Elias said softly.
"It's safe," she corrected him. "That’s what matters."
