Chapter 11 - The Groundbreaking Gala

|
A sudden silence cascaded through the crowded ballroom, starting at the entrance and spreading quickly toward the main stage.
Margot Carver stepped into the room.
She wore a backless gown of heavy black silk that brushed the polished marble floor. Her dark hair was swept up into a flawless, intricate knot, revealing her long neck and sharp jawline. There was no makeup covering her left cheek—only a pale, faint shadow where Trevor's fingers had struck her forty-eight hours ago.
She didn't look like a woman having a nervous breakdown.
She looked like royalty visiting a secondary court.
Walking two paces behind her was Elias Carver, dressed in a double-breasted charcoal suit, surrounded by three of his top associates.
Trevor froze, his champagne glass stopping halfway to his mouth. "What is she doing here? Who let her in?!"
"Trevor," Briana hissed under her breath, grabbing his arm. "Look who she's with."
The room’s chatter died down into a series of hushed, frantic whispers.
Major investors who had avoided Trevor all morning suddenly turned around to watch Margot walk calmly across the ballroom floor. She moved with effortless grace, holding a slender silver tablet beneath her arm like a weapon.

Elias stopped near the main bar, leaning his arm against the mahogany counter and making eye contact with two city inspectors sitting near the stage. Both men immediately set their drinks down and sat up straight.
Margot walked directly toward the head table where Trevor and Briana stood.
