Chapter 14 - Powder Room Ambush

|
The ballroom dissolved into complete chaos as investors grabbed their phones and swarmed the city inspectors.
Seeing her opportunity, Briana Voss slipped out of the main hall, her heels clicking rapidly against the tile as she retreated down the long corridor toward the executive restrooms.
Margot walked slowly behind her, pushing open the heavy mahogany door of the powder room.
Briana stood before the grand mirror, her hands shaking as she tried to pull a small leather passport holder from her clutch bag.
"You ruined everything, you crazy bitch!" Briana spat, turning around with her eyes wide and panicked. "Do you have any idea what you've done?!"
"I exposed a theft," Margot said, standing calmly by the door. "You and Trevor pulled twelve million dollars out of the safety budget to fund your personal accounts in Central America."
Briana took a deep breath, trying to regain her high-society composure. She reached into her bag, pulled out a gold pen, and aggressively scribbled a number on a blank check.
"Two million dollars," Briana said, thrusting the paper toward Margot’s face. "Right now. You walk out of here, call off Carver, and tell the press it was a technical misunderstanding. You can leave Ohio tonight and start over anywhere you want."
Margot looked down at the check, then up at Briana’s desperate, trembling face.

Margot took the check, tore it precisely in half, and let the pieces drop slowly onto the marble floor.
"I don't need your two million, Briana," Margot whispered. "I already took the whole project."
