Chapter 15 - The Shadow Steps Forward

|
When Margot stepped out of the restroom, Trevor was waiting in the dimly lit service corridor, his tuxedo jacket disheveled, his eyes bloodshot with rage.
"You think you're smart, don't you?" Trevor hissed, stepping directly into her path and blocking the door. "You think Elias Carver gives a damn about you? You're just a weapon to him! Once he gets his money back, he’ll throw you away like trash!"
"Step aside, Trevor," Margot said quietly.
"No!" he yelled, lunging forward to grab her shoulders. "You ruined my life! You destroyed everything I built!"
Before his fingers could touch her coat, a heavy leather-gloved hand gripped Trevor’s throat from behind.
Elias Carver lifted Trevor two inches off the floor, slamming him backward against the wood-paneled wall with a deafening thud.
Trevor gagged, his hands clawing uselessly at Elias’s grip, his polished shoes dangling off the carpet.
"You made a mistake at dinner two nights ago, Trevor," Elias said, his voice terrifyingly calm, like winter wind passing over open graves. "You laid your hand on a woman under my protection. And then you tried to use my money to cover your fraud."
Elias leaned in close, his dark eyes inches from Trevor’s terrified face.

"If I ever see you step within fifty feet of Margot Carver again," Elias whispered, "they won't find your body in the river. They won't find it anywhere."
Elias released his grip. Trevor crumpled to the floor, gasping frantically for air, clutching his neck.
