Chapter 9

Daniel lost his mind. With zero dollars in his account, no job, and no access to my credit cards, he realized he was completely stranded. Desperation made men stupid, and Daniel was no exception.

Two days after the incident, around 3:00 PM, I was sitting at my desk reviewing a client contract when the security desk downstairs buzzed up.

“Ms. Vance, you have a visitor in the lobby,” the receptionist said nervously. “It’s your husband... well, your estranged husband, Mr. Daniel Vance. He’s causing a bit of a scene, demanding to see you.”

“Tell him he is not authorized to enter this building, and if he doesn’t leave immediately, security will escort him out,” I replied calmly, not even looking up from my monitor.

Before the receptionist could relay the message, the glass doors to our executive floor swung open. Daniel burst into the hallway, looking disheveled, his suit wrinkled and his hair unwashed. He had slipped past lobby security by pretending to be a corporate client.

Staff members turned to stare in shock. Daniel marched straight toward my desk, his eyes wide and wild.

“Elena! How could you freeze my accounts?!” Daniel shouted, slamming his palms onto my wooden desk. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done? I couldn’t even buy a cup of coffee this morning! You are destroying my life!”

The entire office went dead silent. Every eye was locked on us. I slowly closed my laptop, stood up from my chair, and looked at him with icy detachment.

“You’re trespassing in my workplace, Daniel,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the quiet office. “And you’re making a fool of yourself. Security is already on their way up. Turn around and walk out, or everyone in this building is about to watch you get thrown out in handcuffs—again.”
