Chapter 12

The social media stunt blew up right in their faces—just not the way Vivian wanted. Instead of painting me as the villain, internet sleuths quickly dug up public records of Daniel’s unemployment history, his past failed business ventures, and the police report from the night of the domestic assault.
Within forty-eight hours, Daniel became the laughingstock of local social media groups. His old fraternity brothers and "finance bros" unfriended him en masse, realizing he was a broke parasite living off his mother.
Meanwhile, my life was scaling new heights. Marcus officially promoted me to Director of Acquisitions at Apex Real Estate, complete with a massive salary increase, a corner office, and a company-sponsored vehicle.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, my divorce attorney, Richard Sterling—a silver-haired litigator known across the state as a legal pitbull—invited me to his office to review the final settlement terms before submitting them to the judge.
“Elena, I have to hand it to you,” Richard said, leaning back in his leather chair with a satisfied grin. “I’ve handled hundreds of high-net-worth divorces, but your case is a textbook masterclass in preparation. The prenuptial agreement is ironclad. Furthermore, because of the domestic assault charge and the proven embezzlement of fifteen thousand dollars, Daniel has zero legal grounds to claim spousal support.”
“What about his counter-suit demanding half of my apartment?” I asked, sipping my black coffee.
Richard chuckled darkly. “Thrown out of court with prejudice. In fact, between his legal fees, the restitution he owes you for the embezzled funds, and his total lack of income, Daniel is effectively bankrupt. His mother’s apartment is currently facing foreclosure because Daniel convinced her to take out a second mortgage to fund his fake tech startup last year.”

I stared out the window at the rain washing down the glass. The house of cards they built on lies and arrogance had finally collapsed under its own weight.
