Chapter 5

The officers didn’t hesitate. Daniel was cuffed and led out of the apartment in front of his mother, his expensive shoes shuffling awkwardly across the marble floor he had strutted on just an hour before. Vivian shrieked, hurling insults and curses at the officers and me until the elevator doors finally swallowed her up.

Then, silence returned.

It wasn't an oppressive silence anymore. It was a profound, beautiful peace. I stood alone in the center of the living room, listening to the hum of the refrigerator and the distant sirens outside. I walked over to the dining table, picked up the bowl of unsalted soup, and poured it straight down the kitchen sink.

I washed the bowl, wiped down the counters, and walked out onto the balcony. The cool night air hit my face, soothing the burning sting on my cheek. For three years, I had shrunk myself to fit into Daniel’s fragile ego. I had allowed myself to feel small, unworthy, and dependent. But looking out over the millions of lights in the city, I realized the truth: I was never weak. I had simply chosen to be patient until the mask finally slipped completely.

Inside my bedroom, I packed a small duffel bag of Daniel’s expensive designer clothes and toiletries, tossing them carelessly into the hallway outside my front door. I changed the smart-lock security codes immediately, locking out their digital fingerprints forever.

When I finally crawled into bed that night, for the first time in three years, I slept without holding my breath. The nightmares didn't come. The crushing weight on my chest was gone. I was finally breathing free air in a home that belonged entirely to me.
