Chapter 13

The final mediation hearing was set for a Friday morning.
I arrived at the courthouse dressed in a sharp, tailored white blazer and black pencil skirt, looking every bit the successful corporate executive I was. As I walked down the marble corridors, I ran into Daniel and Vivian sitting on a wooden bench outside Courtroom 4B.
They looked terrible. Daniel had dark circles under his eyes, his designer suit was wrinkled and smelled faintly of cheap cigarettes, and he looked ten years older than he had two weeks ago. Vivian looked defeated, her designer facade completely stripped away by the harsh reality of impending poverty.
When Daniel saw me approaching, he stood up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. He didn't look angry anymore; he looked completely broken.
“Elena... please,” Daniel whispered, taking a half-step toward me before a court bailiff stepped between us. “Just... talk to me for one minute. Drop the criminal charges for embezzlement. If I have a felony on my record, my life is completely over. I can’t get a job anywhere.”
I stopped, looking down at the man who had once stood over me with his hand raised, believing he was king of the world.
“When you slapped me across the face over a bowl of soup, Daniel, you made your choice,” I said quietly, my voice devoid of anger, which made it ten times colder. “You thought my silence was weakness. You thought you could control me, break me, and throw me away. You miscalculated.”
Vivian buried her face in her hands, letting out a ragged sob. “We’re ruined... everything is gone...”
“You brought this on yourselves,” I replied.

The courtroom doors opened, and the bailiff called our case.
