Chapter 17

Summer transitioned into a crisp, beautiful autumn. The city streets were lined with golden leaves, and the air carried the refreshing chill of a new season.
My life was moving forward at a breathtaking pace. Apex Real Estate was expanding its operations into international markets, and Marcus had officially named me Vice President of Regional Acquisitions. I was traveling to major financial hubs, closing deals with billionaire investors, and finally living the life I had always dreamed of—one built entirely on my own terms, with my own strength.
I hadn't heard from Daniel or Vivian since the night the bench warrant was issued. Word had it that Daniel had skipped town to avoid serving time for violating the restraining order and failing to pay his restitution, fleeing to another state where he was living out of his car. Let him run. Some people are destined to destroy themselves no matter how many lifelines you throw them.
On a Saturday afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a quiet lunch at a high-end bistro in downtown Manhattan. I sat at a corner table by the window, enjoying a plate of artisanal pasta and reading a fascinating book on modern architectural design.
As the waiter poured sparkling water into my glass, a shadow fell across my table.
I looked up, expecting a colleague or an acquaintance. Instead, standing before me was a tall, distinguished-looking man in his late thirties with warm hazel eyes, a kind smile, and an aura of genuine confidence.
“Excuse me,” the man said, his voice smooth and polite. “I know this might be completely out of line, but I couldn't help noticing you sitting here. You’re Elena Vance, aren't you? The VP of Acquisitions at Apex?”

I raised an eyebrow, closing my book halfway. “I am. And you are?”
