Chapter 4

The lead officer opened the folder, running his eyes swiftly over the official government-stamped deed and the notarized prenuptial agreement. A heavy silence descended upon the dining room. The air felt completely sucked out.

Vivian rushed forward, her face twisted in absolute fury. “That’s a lie! That paper is fake! My son is the man of this house! He runs the finances, he provides the stability, and she is just a bitter, ungrateful woman trying to manipulate the law!”

The second officer stepped firmly between Vivian and me, resting his hand casually on his utility belt. “Ma’am, I suggest you step back and watch your tone. Falsifying government documents is a federal offense, but these are 100 percent legitimate. Miss Vance is the sole legal owner of this residence.”

Daniel’s face drained of all color. The arrogance evaporated from his eyes, replaced by a sudden, frantic panic. He looked at me, his lower lip trembling as he tried to put on a mask of boyish charm.

“Elena... honey, please,” Daniel whispered, taking a step toward me. “You’re taking this way too far. A slap? It was just a slip of the hand! We’ve been married for three years! You can’t seriously throw me out over a bowl of soup? Think about our vows!”

“Our vows didn’t include physical abuse, financial extortion, or harboring your mother while she harassed me in my own home,” I replied coldly, not flinching an inch.

The lead officer looked at Daniel, then back at me. “Miss Vance, do you wish to press charges for domestic assault?”

“Yes, Officer,” I said clearly. “And I want them both formally trespassed and removed from my property immediately.”

Daniel let out a pathetic sound, half-gasp, half-sob. “You can’t do this! Where are we supposed to go? We don’t have anywhere else!”

“That,” I said, pointing toward the door, “is no longer my problem.”
