Chapter 6

Morning sunlight flooded through the bedroom windows, bright and crisp. I woke up feeling lighter than air, made a fresh cup of artisan coffee, and enjoyed it on the balcony without anyone hovering over my shoulder to criticize the brand or complain that I wasn't cooking bacon.

My phone buzzed relentlessly on the kitchen island. I glanced at the screen: twenty-two missed calls and over fifty text messages from Daniel and Vivian.

I picked up the phone, tapping open the chat. Daniel’s messages ranged from pathetic begging to outright threats.

“Elena, please pick up. I’m staying on a pull-out couch at my mother’s cramped place. It smells like mothballs. I can’t live like this. Come on, be reasonable.”

“You humiliated me in front of the police. My reputation is ruined if my friends find out. Drop the charges or you’ll regret it.”

“You owe me half of everything we built! You can’t just kick me out like a stray dog!”

I let out a cold laugh, typing a single reply before blocking his number entirely:

“You built nothing. Check the prenup, Daniel. You signed away all rights to my assets on our wedding day. If you text me again, I’m forwarding your threats to my divorce attorney.”

I blocked Vivian’s number next without reading a single word of her unhinged rants. It felt like shedding a heavy winter coat in the middle of summer. I got dressed in a sharp, slate-gray Chanel pantsuit, styled my hair into a sleek bun, and headed out the door to conquer the day at the high-end property firm where I worked as a senior consultant.
