Chapter 18

The man extended a warm, firm hand. “Julian Thorne. I’m the principal architect behind the new skyline towers project your firm just acquired last month.”

A flicker of recognition crossed my mind. I had reviewed Julian’s architectural blueprints extensively during my recent promotion negotiations. His designs were brilliant, innovative, and deeply respectful of urban space.

“Julian Thorne,” I repeated, a genuine smile spreading across my face as I shook his hand. “Your structural designs for the West End project are absolute masterpieces. Have a seat, Mr. Thorne.”

Julian didn't hesitate. He pulled out the chair opposite me, his eyes bright with intelligence and humor. “Please, call me Julian. And thank you. Though working with Apex has been a revelation mostly because of how sharp, professional, and uncompromising the executive team is—especially you.”

We spent the next two hours talking about architecture, urban development, travel, and life. There was no arrogance in Julian, no condescension, and no hidden agenda. For the first time in years, I found myself sitting across from a man who listened when I spoke, valued my intellect, and looked at me as an equal partner rather than a possession or a servant.

When the lunch ended, Julian walked me out to the sidewalk.

“I’ve really enjoyed this, Elena,” Julian said, his gaze lingering warmly on mine. “Would you be opposed to continuing this conversation over dinner sometime next week? No business talk—just good food and good company.”

I looked into his eyes, feeling a quiet, fluttering warmth in my chest that I hadn’t felt in a very long time.

“I’d like that very much, Julian,” I replied softly.

May you like

He smiled, handed me his card, and walked down the avenue. I stood on the pavement for a moment, feeling the autumn breeze brush against my face.
