Chapter 9 - The Midnight Extraction

The extraction of Evelyn Cross required the absolute precision of a military operation. Richard’s wealth meant he could afford cutting-edge surveillance, and his paranoia meant he used it ruthlessly against his own wife.
Marcus and our elite security team flew into Chicago under the cover of a brutal winter snowstorm, utilizing the chaotic weather to mask their movements. Evelyn had managed to send us a single, encrypted message using a burner phone we had smuggled to her via her trusted pediatrician. The window for extraction was exactly fourteen minutes—the brief period when Richard’s primary security detail conducted their shift change at his sprawling suburban estate.
I remained in the Newport command center, pacing the floor, listening to the encrypted radio chatter with a knot of profound anxiety tight in my stomach. I remembered the sheer, suffocating terror of my own escape, the feeling of running through the dark with Emma in my arms, expecting a hand to grab my shoulder at any second.
"Hawk One to Base, we have the package," Marcus’s voice crackled through the secure comms line, sharp and heavily disciplined. "Evelyn is in the vehicle. We are en route to the private airfield. No pursuit detected."
I let out a long, shuddering breath, gripping the edge of the conference table. "Understood, Hawk One. Weather in Newport is clearing. We will have the safe house prepped and a medical team standing by upon your arrival."
Four hours later, a sleek, unmarked black SUV pulled up to the heavily secured gates of our primary sanctuary on the Rhode Island coast. I walked out into the freezing night air, wrapping a heavy wool coat tightly around myself.
The vehicle doors opened, and Evelyn stepped out. She was trembling violently, clutching a small, battered duffel bag to her chest as if it contained her entire life. She looked around at the towering walls, the security cameras, and finally at me.

"You’re safe now, Evelyn," I said softly, stepping forward and gently placing a warm blanket over her trembling shoulders. "He cannot reach you here. The doors are locked, and you hold the only key."
Evelyn collapsed into my arms, sobbing with a mixture of absolute exhaustion and profound, shattering relief. The storm in Chicago was over. The fight for her freedom had just begun.
