Chapter 12 - The Courtroom Chessboard

The battleground officially shifted from the coastal roads of Newport to the sprawling, high-stakes federal courthouse in Providence. The Two-Finger Shield was not merely asking for a divorce for Evelyn; we were initiating a massive civil litigation suit against Richard Cross for profound financial abuse, emotional terrorism, and the illegal concealment of marital assets.

The courtroom was packed with aggressive reporters and high-priced corporate attorneys. Richard sat at the defense table, wearing a bespoke Italian suit, his posture radiating absolute, arrogant contempt. He looked at Evelyn, who sat beside me, and offered a chilling, manipulative smile intended to instantly break her resolve.

Evelyn flinched, instinctively shrinking back into her chair.

I reached under the heavy mahogany table and grabbed her trembling hand, squeezing it with fierce, uncompromising strength. "Do not look at him," I whispered fiercely. "Look at the judge. Look at me. He is a small, pathetic man who has to buy his power. You are stronger than he will ever be."

Richard’s lead defense attorney, a ruthless man known for completely destroying victims on the stand, stood up to deliver his opening statement. He painted Evelyn as a deeply unstable, greedy woman who had fabricated claims of abuse to steal half of Richard’s corporate empire. It was a disgusting, entirely predictable narrative designed to humiliate her into submission.

But our legal team was ready.

Our lead counsel, a brilliant former federal prosecutor named Jessica, stood up and methodically dismantled their entire defense. She didn't rely on emotional testimony; she presented undeniable, mathematically flawless forensic evidence. She projected the illegally routed Cayman Island bank statements onto the massive courtroom screens. She presented the sworn testimony of the New York financial brokers who had flipped on Richard.

"Your Honor," Jessica stated, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "We are not here to debate a standard marital dissolution. We are here to expose a highly sophisticated, illegal financial hostage situation. Richard Cross weaponized his wealth to enslave his wife. And we demand the immediate, permanent transfer of fifty percent of all concealed assets directly to Evelyn Cross."

Richard’s arrogant smile instantly vanished, his face draining of all color as the judge reviewed the damning financial ledgers. The fortress he had built was rapidly, spectacularly burning to the ground.
