Chapter 13 - Echoes from the Cell

The victory in the Providence courthouse was absolute. The judge, entirely disgusted by the undeniable evidence of Richard’s financial terrorism, not only granted Evelyn a highly favorable divorce and full custody of her children, but also heavily sanctioned Richard’s legal team for filing fraudulent financial disclosures.

The Two-Finger Shield had proven its immense, untouchable power on the national stage.

But true peace is a fragile construct, constantly threatened by the ghosts of the past.

A week after Evelyn’s victory, I was sitting in my quiet coastal home, watching the sunset paint the ocean in brilliant shades of violet and gold. The mail had just been delivered. I sifted through the standard bills and foundation correspondence until my hand stopped dead on a plain, white envelope.

There was no return address. Just my name, written in a sharp, unmistakable, perfectly controlled handwriting that instantly made my blood run cold.

It was from David.

He was currently serving a twenty-year sentence in a maximum-security federal penitentiary for the attempted murder, fraud, and severe abuse he had inflicted upon me. He was supposed to be entirely isolated, locked away in a concrete box, completely stripped of his power.

My hands trembled as I carefully sliced the envelope open. Inside was a single piece of lined prison paper.

Sarah,

I read about your little foundation in the financial papers in the prison library. You think you are saving these women. You think you have built an impenetrable fortress. But walls can be climbed, and money can buy keys. You are just as naive as you were the day I married you. Enjoy the sunshine, Sarah. Sentences end.

David.

I read the letter twice, my breathing growing shallow, the terrifying memories of the kitchen island rushing back with violent force. He was trying to reach out from the dark, trying to pull me back into the suffocating cage of his control.

But then, I looked up. I saw Emma laughing in the backyard, playing safely under the watchful eye of my father. I looked at my healed leg, and I thought about Evelyn, who was currently sleeping safely in a new home because of the empire I had built.

I didn't panic. I walked into the kitchen, turned on the gas stove, and held the letter over the blue flame. I watched David’s words burn to absolute ash, washing the remaining soot down the drain. He was a ghost, and I was entirely done being haunted.
