Chapter 11 - The Intimidation Tactic

Billionaires do not surrender their power quietly. When the New York financial firm, terrified by our aggressive federal injunctions, instantly froze Richard Cross’s offshore trust, his retaliation was swift, desperate, and heavily funded.
Three days after the assets were frozen, the quiet tranquility of Newport was violently disrupted.
I was driving Emma to her elementary school on a crisp Tuesday morning. The coastal roads were relatively empty, but my eyes constantly scanned the rearview mirror—a survival instinct that never truly faded. Two miles from the school, a heavy, blacked-out SUV aggressively pulled out from a side street, tailing my car entirely too closely.
My pulse spiked. I immediately hit the encrypted panic button on my dashboard, connecting directly to Marcus at the foundation’s security hub.
"Marcus, I have a tail," I said, my voice completely steady despite the fear hammering in my chest. "Black SUV, Rhode Island plates, keeping a two-car distance. I’m altering my route away from Emma’s school."
"I have your GPS coordinates, Sarah," Marcus replied instantly, the sound of tactical movement echoing in the background. "I’m dispatching two intercept vehicles right now. Do not stop your car under any circumstances."
I looked at Emma in the rearview mirror. She was reading a book, blissfully unaware of the looming threat. I gripped the steering wheel, my knuckles turning white. Richard Cross had hired private security contractors to intimidate me, to send a clear message that stepping between him and his wife carried a massive, personal risk.
Within ninety seconds, two dark, unmarked foundation security vehicles came roaring down the opposite side of the coastal highway. With terrifying, flawless precision, they executed a synchronized U-turn, violently cutting off the black SUV tailing me and forcing it aggressively onto the gravel shoulder of the road.
I didn't slow down. I drove straight to the foundation headquarters, the massive steel gates locking securely behind me.

"They were private investigators hired by Richard’s law firm," Marcus reported an hour later, walking into my office. "We confiscated their cameras and politely advised them to leave the state. They were trying to scare you into dropping Evelyn’s case."
"They failed," I stated coldly, looking out the reinforced windows of my office. "Double the security on the safe houses. Richard just proved he is terrified. Now, we break him."
