Chapter 24 - The Subterranean Breach

The realization that David or his highly paid operatives had potentially infiltrated the building utilizing a fabricated maintenance contract instantly shifted the battlefield. We weren't bracing for a siege; we were already engaged in close-quarters combat.

"Marcus, secure the primary stairwells," I ordered, drawing the compact, specialized firearm I was licensed to carry and heavily trained to use. "Leo, shut down the elevators and lock all internal blast doors. We seal the sub-basement."

Marcus and three elite contractors moved with terrifying speed, descending the concrete stairwell toward the lower levels. I remained in the operations center, watching their tactical cameras feed directly to the main screens.

The sub-basement was a dark, cavernous maze of humming generators, thick electrical cables, and heavy water mains. It was the only vulnerability in our otherwise impenetrable fortress.

"Hawk One advancing," Marcus’s voice crackled over the radio, his tactical flashlight cutting through the gloom. "No visual on the maintenance crew. The backup generator panel has been manually disabled."

"They are trying to cut the power to the main security grid," Leo warned from the terminal. "If they succeed, the electronic locks on the blast doors will fail open in three minutes due to the fire safety protocols."

Suddenly, the tactical feed on the main monitor violently shuddered. Muffled, suppressed gunfire echoed through the comms.

"Contact!" Marcus shouted, returning fire. "Two heavily armed tangos in the north corridor! They are professional mercenaries, Sarah! They are highly trained."

"Hold the line, Marcus," I commanded, my heart hammering. David hadn't come himself; he had sent a hit squad funded by the remaining hidden assets we hadn't discovered.

I looked at Leo. "Can you manually override the fire safety protocols? Keep the blast doors locked even if we lose primary power?"

"It violates every safety code on earth," Leo sweated, typing frantically. "If the building burns, we are trapped."

"If those mercenaries get up here, we are dead," I countered flawlessly. "Override it."

"Override engaged," Leo confirmed just as the lights in the operations center violently died, instantly replaced by the eerie, dull glow of the localized emergency batteries. The power was cut, but the doors remained sealed. We had trapped the monsters in the basement.
