Chapter 5 - The Truth About the Trust Fund|

By nine o'clock the following morning, Emily and I were sitting inside the high-rise corner office of our family attorney, Arthur Harrison. The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the room, but it did nothing to settle the anxiety vibrating through Emily’s chest.

“So... everything my mother announced at the baby shower yesterday was actually true, Mr. Harrison?” Emily asked nervously, wrapping her fingers around her paper cup.

Arthur smiled warmly, leaning across his polished oak desk and pushing a thick leather folder toward her.

“It is entirely true, Emily,” Arthur explained. “Your late father was an extraordinarily brilliant man. When he established your ten-million-dollar inheritance trust, he included a very specific, ironclad contingency clause that only your mother and I knew about.”

I took Emily’s free hand, squeezing it gently as I took over the explanation.

“Your father wanted to make sure you were loved for who you were, not for your bank account,” I said. “The trust fund clause stated clearly that the funds would only be unlocked if your marriage remained completely independent and free of financial coercion for five consecutive years. If there were any verified signs of financial abuse, fraud, or spousal exploitation... I was granted absolute legal authority to freeze every single cent.”

“And Patricia Vale made a fatal assumption,” Arthur chimed in with a sharp smirk. “She assumed that the moment you gave birth to a grandchild, the trust would automatically disburse into a joint account accessible by Brandon. In fact, Patricia was so confident in this assumption that she took out two million dollars in high-interest loans from private lenders to keep her failing real estate firm afloat.”

Emily gasped, her face draining of color.

“So that’s why they were constantly pressuring me to get pregnant? They didn't want a child... they wanted a cash payout!”

“Precisely,” I said bitterly. “They didn't see a daughter-in-law or a grandchild. They saw a giant piggy bank. But now, the bank is locked, and I’ve swallowed the key.”

At that exact moment, Emily’s phone began vibrating wildly on the glass table. The screen lit up with twenty missed calls and a barrage of text messages from Brandon.

The real battle was finally beginning.
