Chapter 1 - The Unthinkable Humiliation|
I knew something was terribly wrong before I even stepped into the grand ballroom. A hall filled with two hundred wealthy guests, crystal chandeliers, and soft jazz music should not feel as suffocating as a courtroom awaiting a murder verdict.
Pink roses cascaded over every marble table. A glittering banner hung near the champagne tower, reading in gold foil: Welcome, Baby Lily. My daughter’s baby shower was supposed to be the happiest day of her life.
Then I spotted Emily.
She was eight months pregnant, her ankles visibly swollen, her hair slipping messy from its pins. She was down on her hands and knees in the center of the room, desperately scrubbing a dark red wine stain out of an expensive ivory rug with a linen napkin.
Above her, lounging comfortably on a velvet sofa, sat Patricia Vale.
My daughter’s mother-in-law wore three carats of diamonds at noon and carried her cruelty like expensive perfume. She was lazily tearing through designer gift boxes meant for Emily’s unborn child, slicing delicate silk ribbons with one manicured fingernail.
“Oh, don’t strain yourself too much, dear,” Patricia announced loudly, her voice carrying across the quiet room so every banker, socialite, and lawyer present could hear. “Though I suppose crawling on all fours is wonderful exercise for someone your size. The doctor did warn you about your rapid weight gain, didn’t he?”
A few muffled giggles echoed from the surrounding tables.
My son-in-law, Brandon Vale, stood just three feet away holding a glass of scotch. He was smiling pleasantly, like a man watching bad weather pass over someone else’s house. He didn't offer a hand. He didn't even tell her to stand up.
Emily’s face burned a furious, painful red.

“It’s okay, Mom,” she whispered meekly as I rushed over and dropped to my knees beside her. “I spilled the glass. It was my fault.”
“No, it wasn't,” I said, my voice shaking with a rage so cold it surprised even me. “Get off the floor.”
