Chapter 17 - Secrets Inside the Safe|

Two days later, while supervising contractors who were renovating the mansion's basement into a playroom for Lily, I noticed something strange behind a section of wooden paneling in Richard’s old study.
Curious, I pulled away the rotting wood to reveal a hidden, heavy steel wall safe embedded directly into the concrete foundation.
My heart hammered against my ribs as I wiped away decades of dust from the electronic keypad. I tried Emily’s birthday. Error. I tried our wedding anniversary. Error.
On my third and final attempt, I entered six digits that only Richard and I held dear: the date he incorporated his very first company thirty years ago.
Click.
The heavy steel door popped open with a quiet hiss. Inside lay no gold bullion or diamond jewelry. Instead, there was a single, thick leather binder sealed with red wax, accompanied by a handwritten letter addressed to me in my husband's unmistakable script.
My hands trembled violently as I unfolded the yellowed paper:
"Dearest Margaret,
If you are reading this letter, it means I am long gone, Emily’s trust fund has been triggered, and the Vale family has finally exposed their true nature. I knew Patricia Vale long before Emily ever brought Brandon home. She was once a silent partner in my early business ventures, and she betrayed me, selling company assets to an organized crime syndicate to clear her personal debts.
Her directing Brandon to pursue Emily was no cosmic accident, my love. It was a calculated, multi-generational scheme to reclaim the fortune she believed I stole from her."

A cold sweat broke out across my forehead as I read the next lines:
"But Patricia was merely a pawn. The syndicate she owed money to is still active. I have enclosed a master ledger detailing the offshore accounts and secret identities of the men operating in the shadows. They will not accept losing the ten million dollars. Protect our daughter, Margaret. Protect our family."
