Chapter 13 - The Overwhelming Hearing|
Three weeks later, we stepped through the heavy bronze doors of the County Family Court. The air inside the courtroom was thick with unbearable tension.
Brandon arrived looking impeccably groomed in a navy designer suit, deliberately putting on a pathetic, heartbroken performance for the judge. He slumped in his chair, constantly glancing over at Emily with fake, watery eyes, trying to play the part of a devastated father being cruelly kept from his child. Patricia sat directly behind him in the gallery, glaring at the back of my head with venomous hatred.
Brandon’s high-priced attorney kicked off the hearing with an impassioned, dramatic opening statement.
“Your Honor, my client may have experienced minor marital turbulence, but he is a loving, dedicated father who desires nothing more than to raise his infant daughter,” the lawyer declared, pounding his fist gently on the podium. “The plaintiff’s malicious decision to alter the child’s surname and deny my client visitation is a cruel act of personal vengeance designed to erase a father’s sacred rights!”
The judge listened quietly, adjusting his glasses before turning his attention toward our lead attorney, Arthur Harrison.
“Does the legal representation for the mother have a response?” the judge asked calmly.
Arthur stood up smoothly, buttoning his suit jacket, and walked over to the courtroom AV terminal.
“Your Honor, paternal rights are indeed sacred,” Arthur said clearly. “However, they lose their sanctity when a father views his newborn child not as a human being, but as a financial extortion tool.”
Arthur tapped a button on his laptop, and the large projection screen behind the judge’s bench instantly lit up with financial records and encrypted text message logs.
“What you are looking at, Your Honor, are verified subpoena records from the state prosecutor’s office,” Arthur explained. “These documents prove that Mr. Brandon Vale and his mother, Patricia Vale, fraudulently secured two million dollars in high-interest loans from unregistered predatory lenders. In a text message sent just three weeks before the birth, Mr. Vale wrote the following to his lender:”
Arthur pointed to the bold red text projected on the screen:
May you like
‘Don't worry about the payment deadline. My wife is giving birth soon. As soon as the baby arrives, her family’s ten-million-dollar trust fund unlocks, and I’ll pay off the principal and interest in full.’
A collective gasp echoed through the crowded gallery. Brandon’s face drained of every drop of color as he turned toward his mother in sheer, unadulterated horror.
