Chapter 16 - Rebirth|

Six months passed, and life slowly returned to a serene, beautiful rhythm.
The halls of our family estate were once again filled with warmth, light, and the delightful, ringing laughter of baby Lily. She was growing into a healthy, chubby infant with massive, sparkling brown eyes that looked exactly like Emily’s.
Emily had transformed completely. Free from the dark, suffocating shadow of her abusive marriage, she regained her vibrant spirit and radiant confidence. Using a tiny fraction of her trust fund, she opened a contemporary art gallery in the heart of the city’s cultural district—finally pursuing the creative passion Brandon had forced her to give up years ago.
On a warm Sunday afternoon, the two of us sat on the sunlit balcony overlooking the gardens, sipping iced tea while watching Lily happily roll around on a soft blanket.
“You know, Mom,” Emily said quietly, stirring her glass. “Sometimes I wake up and think this whole past year was just a terrible nightmare. I never thought I’d feel peaceful again.”
“You fought for your life, sweetheart,” I said gently, squeezing her wrist. “You deserve every ounce of happiness you have now.”
Yet, deep inside my chest, a quiet anxiety lingered.

My late husband, Richard Vance, had been an extraordinarily brilliant businessman, but he was also a man who carried dangerous secrets to his grave. I couldn't stop thinking about the ultra-specific clauses he had placed inside Emily’s trust fund. Why had he anticipated financial coercion so precisely? Why had he built such an aggressive legal trap for the Vale family years before Emily even met Brandon?
There was a piece of the puzzle missing. And I was determined to find it.
