Chapter 12 - The First Cry|

After five agonizing hours of surgical complications and terrifying silence, the bright red light above the operating room finally switched off.
The heavy double doors swung open, and the chief obstetrician stepped out into the hallway, pulling down his surgical mask. Beads of sweat covered his forehead, but his tired eyes were warm and smiling.
“She made it,” the doctor announced softly. “It’s a girl. She’s small due to being eight weeks premature, so we’re placing her in the NICU for monitoring, but her lungs are remarkably strong. Mother and daughter are both going to be completely fine.”
A violent sob escaped my throat, and I collapsed onto the waiting room bench, burying my face in my hands as months of terror and repressed rage washed out of me.
Half an hour later, I was permitted to enter the recovery room. Emily lay in the hospital bed, exhausted, pale, but glowing with a fierce, maternal warmth I had never seen in her before. Resting in her arms was a tiny, fragile bundle wrapped in a pink blanket.
“Look at her, Mom,” Emily whispered, tears glistening in her eyes as she looked up at me. “This is Lily.”
I leaned over the bed, gently touching the tip of my pinky finger to my granddaughter’s tiny, velvet-soft cheek.
“She’s absolute perfection,” I smiled, wiping a tear from my eye. “She looks just like you did when you were born.”
“Is it over, Mom?” Emily asked quietly, her voice trembling slightly. “Are they really gone?”
“They will never hurt you again,” I promised her.
The following morning, a hospital administrator brought the official birth certificate documents into the room. When asked for the father’s information and the child's registered surname, Emily didn't hesitate for even a fraction of a second.
“Her name is Lily Vance,” Emily stated, her voice ringing clear and strong across the room. “She takes my maiden name.”

When news of the birth certificate leaked to the press later that afternoon, the Vale family completely lost their minds. Brandon, who had managed to post bail using money borrowed from shady underworld lenders, immediately hired an aggressive tabloid attorney to file an emergency lawsuit for full paternal custody.
The real legal war had officially arrived.
