Chapter 38 - The Brother Who Never ForgotThe speakers remained silent for several seconds.

Then the voice returned.

"You've spent months searching for Jonathan."

"You never realized..."

"I've been watching all of you."

Security monitors lit up around the room.

Live camera feeds.

Our mansion.

Claire's apartment.

The psychiatric hospital.

Even the cemetery.

He had watched everything.

For years.

I stepped toward the camera.

"What do you want?"

A soft laugh.

"The same thing you do."

"The truth."

Claire shouted,

"Then show yourself!"

Another pause.

"I will."

"When you're ready."

A printer suddenly activated.

One page slowly emerged.

It was a current passport.

Photograph included.

Name:

Michael Whitmore.

Issue date:

Two months ago.

The passport was genuine.

He wasn't hiding anymore.

He wanted to be found.

Elias stared at the document.

His hands trembled.

"He shouldn't exist."

The speakers answered immediately.

"Yet here I am."

"You failed, Elias."

"You protected the wrong child."

Elias looked broken.

"I tried."

Michael's voice softened.

"I know."

"You loved us."

"But you never realized..."

"They switched us one final time."

My heart pounded.

"What do you mean?"

Every monitor suddenly displayed the same childhood photograph.

Three boys.

Standing together.

Then a red circle appeared around one face.

Mine.

Michael spoke quietly.

"You still believe you're Subject One."

Silence.

"You aren't."

The room froze.

Claire looked at me.

Then back at the screen.

Michael continued.

"The files were altered."

"The names were reversed."

"The memories were reassigned."

A long pause.

Then the sentence that shattered everything.

"You've been searching for your identity..."

"...using someone else's life."

I couldn't breathe.

"No..."

Michael sighed.

"I'm sorry."

"But Jonathan Whitmore..."

He paused.

"...was never you."

The monitors went black.

Then one final image appeared.

A recent photograph.

Michael.

Standing beside...

My mother.

Alive.

Smiling.

Taken only six days earlier.

Beneath the picture were seven handwritten words.

"Ask her why she chose me instead."

The screen went dark.

No explanation.

No location.

Nothing.

Only one impossible truth remained.

The mother I had buried ten years ago...

Had been secretly meeting the brother none of us even knew existed.

May you like

And somehow...

She had chosen him over her own family.
