Chapter 32 - The Brother Nobody RememberedI didn't sleep.

At sunrise...
I drove back to the abandoned hospital alone.
The keeper was waiting outside.
Almost as if he expected me.
"You opened it."
I held up the photograph.
"Who is the other boy?"
The keeper looked at it for a long time.
Then sighed.
"So Jonathan finally told someone."
"Told me what?"
"There weren't two Whitmore children."
"There were three."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
The keeper nodded.
"Three boys."
"Born on the same day."
"Raised together."
"Until the fire."
I stared.
"My father had three sons?"
"No."
The old man looked at me sadly.
"Only one belonged to Jonathan."
I couldn't breathe.
"What are you talking about?"
He motioned for me to sit.
"Thirty-two years ago..."
"The Whitmore Foundation began an experiment."
"Not scientific."
"Psychological."
"They wanted to know whether identity could be manufactured."
"They raised three boys."
"Same clothes."
"Same education."
"Same memories."
"They wanted to see..."
"...which one would become Jonathan Whitmore's heir."
I whispered,
"That's impossible."
The keeper slowly shook his head.
"No."
"It was successful."
I felt sick.
"So..."
"Which one survived?"
The keeper looked directly into my eyes.
"I don't know."
"They switched names so many times..."
"Even Jonathan stopped knowing."
Silence.
Then he added quietly,
"The fire wasn't an accident."
"It was supposed to erase the evidence."
At that exact moment...
My phone rang.
Claire.
I answered immediately.
"What happened?"
Her voice was shaking.
"You need to come home."
"Why?"
She struggled to speak.
"Adrian is gone."
I raced back.
The house was chaos.
Security guards everywhere.
Broken glass.
An open safe.
Claire handed me a note.
Only one sentence.
"I finally remembered my real name."
No signature.
No explanation.
Nothing else.
Then security found something else.
A hidden camera recording.
We watched together.
The footage showed Adrian entering the vault.
Opening a secret compartment.
Removing an old passport.
He stared at it for several seconds.
Then whispered...
Not "Adrian."
A different name.
May you like
"Daniel."
The recording ended.
