Chapter 30 - The Patient in Room 214Rain replaced the snow by morning.

The abandoned psychiatric hospital stood on a cliff overlooking the sea.

Broken windows.

Rusted gates.

Hallways swallowed by darkness.

The building should have been empty.

Yet...

Fresh tire tracks led inside.

We followed them.

Room after room.

Floor after floor.

Until we reached a faded metal door.

ROOM 214

The door was unlocked.

Inside...

One bed.

One wooden chair.

One old man reading a newspaper.

He didn't look surprised.

Without raising his eyes, he spoke calmly.

"I wondered how long it would take."

I stepped forward.

"Are you the Archivist?"

He folded the newspaper carefully.

"No."

He smiled.

"I'm only the keeper."

"The Archivist died eight years ago."

My heart sank.

"Then why are we here?"

The old man pointed toward a dusty tape recorder on the bedside table.

"He left something for Jonathan's children."

Adrian pressed PLAY.

A woman's voice filled the room.

Not my mother's.

Not Evelyn's.

Not anyone we recognized.

"If you're listening..."

"...the Whitmore bloodline has already begun destroying itself."

"You believe you're searching for Jonathan."

"But you're asking the wrong question."

A pause.

The voice became colder.

"You should be asking..."

"...who replaced him?"

The recorder clicked off.

The old man slowly stood.

Then handed me a sealed envelope marked with crimson wax.

Across the front, in my father's unmistakable handwriting, were six chilling words:

DO NOT LET ADRIAN READ THIS.
