Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER LEFTThe mansion doors opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
A woman entered.
Elegant.
Calm.
Confident.
She wore a long black coat and carried a small leather folder.
But what froze me wasn't her appearance.
It was the reaction of everyone around me.
The guards lowered their weapons.
Matteo stepped back.
Even Alex looked terrified.
Because he recognized her.
"Impossible..."
Matteo whispered.
The woman smiled faintly.
"Hello, Matteo."
My blood turned cold.
"Who are you?"
She looked at me.
Not with fear.
Not with guilt.
With sadness.
"I knew this day would come."
I stepped forward.
"Answer me."
The woman opened the leather folder.
Inside were documents.
Birth records.
Medical files.
Photographs.
And one document with my name.
My hands started shaking.
"Who are you?"
Her eyes softened.
"I was your mother's closest friend."
She paused.
"And I was there the night your father disappeared."
The room went silent.
"Tell me."
She looked at Lorenzo's empty chair.
"Your father discovered that someone inside the family was selling information to enemies."
My stomach tightened.
"He found proof."
"What proof?"
She opened another file.
A list of names.
Bank accounts.
Secret payments.
Then one name appeared.
I stared.
Unable to breathe.
Because the name belonged to someone I trusted.
Someone who had stood beside me for years.
"No..."
Matteo looked at the document.
His face changed.
"That's impossible."
The woman shook her head.
"It isn't."
I looked at Matteo.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
The person who betrayed my family...
Was someone standing in this room.
Someone who had pretended to protect me.
Someone who had acted like a brother.
The woman placed the final document on the table.
"This is the original confession."
I picked it up.
The handwriting was familiar.
Too familiar.
The first line made my heart stop.
"I betrayed the Whitmore family because I was promised the one thing I always wanted..."
I read the signature.
My hands went numb.
