Chapter 18 - THE CHILD WHO WAS SACRIFICEDNobody moved.

The woman standing beside Lorenzo looked calm.
Too calm.
Like she had been waiting years for this moment.
Lorenzo raised his hands slowly.
"Nobody needs to get hurt."
I stared at him.
"Then explain."
His eyes filled with pain.
"Because you deserve the truth."
The woman beside him laughed softly.
"Truth?"
She looked around the mansion.
"That's a funny word for this family."
Matteo stepped forward.
"You were involved."
She smiled.
"Of course I was."
My hands clenched.
"Who are you?"
She looked at me.
"My name is Victoria."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"The woman who helped your mother disappear."
Adrian's expression changed.
"You knew about me."
Victoria nodded.
"I knew everything."
She walked closer.
"Your mother had two children."
She looked at me.
"But only one was allowed to inherit the Whitmore name."
My heart stopped.
"Why?"
Victoria looked at Adrian.
"Because your grandfather believed one child would be weak."
Silence.
"He wanted an heir."
Her eyes returned to me.
"Not a family."
I looked at Adrian.
"So they erased you."
He nodded.
"My existence was dangerous."
Victoria continued.
"They sent me away with a new identity."
"And told everyone you were an only child."
I felt sick.
All these years...
My brother was alive.
Living somewhere.
Carrying the same pain.
While I lived inside a lie.
"But my mother..."
I struggled to say the words.
"Did she know?"
Adrian looked away.
"Yes."
The answer destroyed me.
"She chose him."
He pointed at me.
"She chose you."
My chest tightened.
"Why?"
Adrian's voice became quiet.
"Because you were sick."
I froze.
"What?"
"When you were born, doctors said you wouldn't survive."
The room became silent.
"My mother made a deal."
I whispered:
"With who?"
Adrian looked toward the family symbol ring.
"With the people who controlled the Whitmore empire."
A horrible realization formed.
"She traded you..."
Adrian nodded.
"To save me?"
"No."
His eyes filled with sadness.
"To save you."
The truth was more painful than any lie.
My mother didn't erase Adrian because she hated him.
She did it because she was forced to choose.
And she chose me.
But then...
I remembered the documents.
The betrayal.
The secrets.
"That doesn't explain everything."
Adrian nodded.
"No."
He looked at Victoria.
"Because someone else took advantage of her choice."
Victoria's smile disappeared.
For the first time...
She looked afraid.
Adrian whispered:
"Your mother didn't create the empire's darkness."
A pause.
"She inherited it."
The lights suddenly flickered.
A phone began ringing.
Everyone looked around.
The sound came from the old desk.
A hidden phone.
Matteo picked it up.
His face changed instantly.
"What?"
He listened.
Then slowly looked at me.
"The person who ordered tonight's attack..."
His voice shook.
"Was not Victoria."
Silence.
"Then who?"
Matteo lowered the phone.
May you like
"The person giving the orders..."
"Is someone who has been inside this mansion all night."
