Chapter 33 - The Name He Was Never Supposed to RememberNobody knew where Adrian had gone.

Or Daniel.
Or whoever he truly was.
The police searched airports.
Train stations.
Private docks.
Nothing.
He had vanished.
Almost professionally.
Then...
Twenty-four hours later...
A package arrived.
No return address.
Inside was Adrian's wedding ring.
A cassette tape.
And another photograph.
This one showed my father.
Standing beside three young boys.
Their faces had been crossed out with black ink.
Except one.
Mine.
I turned the photograph over.
A message had been written recently.
Not by my father.
By Adrian.
"You still don't understand."
I pressed PLAY on the cassette.
Static.
Then Adrian's voice.
"If you're hearing this..."
"I remembered everything."
A pause.
"But remembering isn't the same as understanding."
I felt my stomach tighten.
He continued.
"I wasn't replaced."
"Neither were you."
Silence.
"The person who was replaced..."
"...was Jonathan."
I looked at Claire.
Neither of us spoke.
The tape continued.
"The man who raised us..."
"...wasn't our father."
"He became Jonathan after the fire."
My hands began trembling.
"No..."
The recording wasn't finished.
"The real Jonathan Whitmore died thirty-two years ago."
"And the man buried beside our mother..."
"...has someone else's bones."
The tape clicked.
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Then the front gate alarm suddenly sounded.
A guard's voice echoed through the intercom.
"Sir..."
"There's an elderly man outside."
"What does he want?"
The guard hesitated.
Then answered quietly,
"He says..."
"...he's Jonathan Whitmore."
The room froze.
Claire slowly looked toward me.
Because if the old man outside really was Jonathan...
Then whose funeral had we attended?
May you like
And who was the man who raised us...
for the last thirty-two years?
