Chapter 4 - The Midnight Whisper

|
The storm rolled into Newport Harbor just past midnight. The rain lashed violently against the stony facade of Breakers Mansion, accompanied by the deep, terrifying rumble of thunder.
Abigail was awake, reading in her quarters, when she heard the frantic patter of small feet. She opened her door to find Jerry standing in the hallway, clutching a stuffed bear, his eyes wide with fear.
"The thunder is too loud," he whimpered.
"Come here, sweetheart," Abigail said, scooping him up and carrying him back to the boys' shared bedroom. Ben was already awake, hiding under his heavy down comforter.
Abigail sat on the edge of Jerry's bed, pulling the blankets up tight around his chin. She stayed there, singing a soft, tuneless melody she remembered from her own grandmother, until the boys' breathing finally began to slow.
Just as she turned to leave, Jerry's small hand reached out from the dark and grabbed her sleeve.
"Are you going to leave like the others?" he whispered.
Abigail paused, her heart aching at the profound vulnerability in his tone. The fear of abandonment was a heavy cross for a nine-year-old to bear.
Leaning closer, she brushed a lock of sandy brown hair from his forehead and replied quietly.
"Not if you let me stay."
Outside their slightly open door, hidden in the shadows of the hallway, Pedro Jacobs stood perfectly still.
He had heard the thunder and had come to check on his sons, only to find Abigail already there. He listened to her promise, torn between deep skepticism and an overwhelming, foreign curiosity.

As the mansion settled back into silence, a dark realization washed over Pedro. He had built his vast fortune on the ability to read people, to sense weakness and opportunity in the same breath. Yet, standing in the dark, he realized that a complete stranger had offered his children more comfort in a single week than he had managed to offer in two years.
It was a bitter, uncomfortable shame, and it planted a seed in Pedro's chest that he could no longer ignore.
