Chapter 12 - The Reversal

Pedro descended the stairs slowly, his heavy footsteps echoing in the grand foyer. He felt entirely stripped of his power, a titan brought to his knees by the weeping of his own children.
He stopped behind Abigail, who was still holding the boys tightly on the marble floor.
"Ben. Jerry. Go to your room for a moment. Please," Pedro said, his voice softer than it had been in years.
The boys looked at Abigail for permission. It was a subtle shift in authority, but Pedro noticed it. She nodded gently, and the boys reluctantly abandoned their barricade, trudging up the stairs.
Pedro and Abigail were left alone in the vast, echoing space.
"I was wrong," Pedro said quietly, staring at the toy chest blocking the door.
Abigail stood up, picking up her duffel bag. "You were scared, Pedro. There's a difference. But my bag is packed."
"Unpack it," he pleaded, finally turning to look at her. His dark eyes were bloodshot, the arrogant CEO entirely replaced by a desperate, grieving father. "Please, Abigail. Do not walk out that door."
She hesitated, her grip tightening on the canvas strap. "I cannot work in a house where honesty gets me fired. I won't walk on eggshells to protect your ego."
"I won't ask you to," Pedro promised, taking a step closer. The proximity was electric, a sudden, heavy tension sparking between them. "I need you here. They need you here. God help me, I think I need you here."
The confession hung in the air, raw and unguarded.
Abigail looked at him, seeing past the wealth, past the anger, to the fractured man beneath. She slowly let the duffel bag slide from her shoulder, hitting the floor with a soft thud.
"Tomorrow," Abigail said firmly, her eyes locked on his, "we open the art studio together. With the boys. No arguments."

Pedro swallowed the heavy lump of grief in his throat. He nodded.
"No arguments."
