Chapter 13 - A New Foundation

|

The opening of the art studio changed the very oxygen inside Breakers Mansion.

It wasn't a sudden, miraculous cure for their grief, but it was a release valve. Pedro sat on the floor with Ben and Jerry, showing them the paintbrushes their mother had used, telling them stories he had kept locked away for two years. Abigail watched from the doorway, her heart swelling as she witnessed a family finally begin to heal.

Over the next few weeks, the dynamic in the house shifted entirely.

Pedro stopped working late. He started coming home for dinner every night. The long, silent meals at the formal dining table were replaced by chaotic, messy dinners in the kitchen.

And the relationship between Pedro and Abigail morphed into something dangerously uncharted.

They spent their evenings talking. After the boys were asleep, Pedro would find Abigail in the library, and they would discuss everything from politics to philosophy to the absurdities of the billionaire lifestyle.

One evening, Pedro was pouring them both a glass of wine when his hand brushed against hers.

The contact was brief, but it sent a jolt of pure electricity straight up Abigail's arm. She pulled back slightly, her breath hitching.

Pedro didn't apologize. He held his hand there, his dark eyes fixed on hers. The air in the library grew thick, charged with an undeniable, heavy tension.

"You've changed this house, Abigail," Pedro murmured, stepping into her personal space. The scent of his expensive cologne mixed with the smell of old books.

"I just did my job," she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"You did much more than that," Pedro corrected softly, leaning closer. His gaze dropped briefly to her lips.

Before he could cross the line, the sharp ringing of Pedro's cell phone shattered the quiet intimacy. He pulled back, frustration flashing across his face, and answered the call.

Abigail quickly took her wine and retreated to her quarters, her mind racing. She was falling for her employer, and in her world, that was a recipe for disaster.
