Chapter 1 - The Roar in the Marble Hall

|
"What did you just do to my sons?"
Pedro Jacobs's roar shook the marble walls of Breakers Mansion. The sound bounced off the imported Italian tiles, sharp enough to shatter the delicate silence that usually suffocated the house.
His twin boys, Ben and Jerry, stood frozen in the grand kitchen. They were nine years old, their sandy brown hair messy, their wide, questioning eyes filled with sudden terror. A puddle of dark purple grape juice stained the pristine white marble beneath their feet.
Pedro had watched it happen on his office security feed. He had seen the new nanny, Abigail Hill, walk in on their argument. He expected her to coddle them, to clean it up while offering sweet, hollow platitudes like the ten women he had fired before her. Instead, she had knelt down, locked her unwavering gaze with his grieving sons, and demanded they take responsibility.
"Respect begins with responsibility," Abigail had said, her voice sharp but devoid of cruelty. "If you make a mess, you fix it. No excuses."
Now, Pedro stood in the archway, his chest heaving under his tailored suit. He stepped forward, fully expecting the boys to collapse into the grief-fueled meltdowns that had become their daily routine since their mother passed away.
But they didn't.
Instead, Ben held a roll of paper towels, and Jerry was wiping the floor. They looked up at their father, then back at Abigail, who stood perfectly straight, unbothered by the billionaire's fury.
"I asked you a question, Miss Hill," Pedro growled, closing the distance between them.
"I taught them how to clean up their own mess, Mr. Jacobs," Abigail replied, her tone perfectly even.
"They are children. They are grieving."

"They are capable," she corrected softly. "And pity will not help them grow."
Pedro stared at her, utterly speechless. For the first time in two years, someone had defied him in his own home, and for the first time, his sons weren't crying.
