Chapter 11 - The Line Drawn

|

The argument in the studio escalated until the very walls of the mansion seemed to vibrate with tension.

"You are out of line, Miss Hill," Pedro snarled, stepping into her space, trying to use his physical presence to intimidate her. "You are a nanny. You do not dictate how I grieve, and you do not dictate how I raise my children."

Abigail stood her ground, her dark eyes flashing with fierce defiance. "I don't care about your grief right now, Pedro. I care about the two boys hiding in the hallway because you're screaming."

Pedro froze, turning his head rapidly.

Ben and Jerry were standing in the corridor, clutching each other, their eyes wide with terror. The sound of their father yelling had triggered every trauma they had buried over the last two years.

"Boys..." Pedro started, taking a hesitant step toward them.

They flinched backward.

That single, involuntary movement broke Pedro entirely. He looked at his hands, then at Abigail, the anger draining from him, leaving only a hollow devastation.

"Pack your bags," Pedro whispered, unable to look her in the eye. "Your employment here is terminated."

Abigail didn't argue. She didn't beg. She gave him a look of profound pity, then walked past him to comfort the boys before heading to her quarters.

Thirty minutes later, she carried her duffel bag down the grand staircase.

As she reached the bottom, she found her path completely blocked.

Ben and Jerry were sitting cross-legged in the center of the foyer, directly in front of the heavy mahogany front doors. They had dragged their heavy toy chest over to barricade the exit.

"You can't leave," Ben sobbed, his small fists clenched tightly.

"We won't let you," Jerry added, tears streaming down his face.

Abigail dropped her bag, her heart shattering into a million pieces. She knelt on the cold marble floor, pulling both boys into her arms.

Pedro stood at the top of the stairs, watching the scene unfold. He saw his sons physically fighting to keep the only mother figure they had known in years. He realized, with a sickening jolt, that firing Abigail wouldn't protect them. It would destroy them.
