Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

|

The first week at Breakers Mansion was a rigorous test of endurance. Abigail quickly realized that Pedro Jacobs wasn't just a demanding employer; he was a ghost haunting his own life.

He left before the boys woke up and returned long after they were asleep. His entire existence was poured into his corporate empire, desperately trying to outrun the grief of losing his wife.

Abigail focused entirely on Ben and Jerry. They were brilliant boys, but their emotional volatility was a hidden landmine. One afternoon, while exploring the massive estate, Jerry found an old, locked door in the east wing.

"What's in there?" Jerry asked, tugging aggressively on the brass handle.

"I believe it's your mother's old art studio," Abigail said gently, checking the master keycard she had been given. It flashed red. Access denied.

Ben kicked the door, his face instantly twisting into a dark scowl.

"Dad locked it! He locks everything! He hates us!"

Ben threw himself onto the carpet, preparing for the kind of explosive tantrum that had driven the other nannies to quit. He screamed, his small fists pounding the floor.

Abigail didn't panic. She didn't try to shush him or offer him candy to quiet down. She simply sat on the floor next to him, crossing her legs, and waited.

Ten minutes passed. The screams turned into heavy, wet sobs.

"It's okay to be angry, Ben," Abigail finally said, her voice a calm anchor in his storm. "It's incredibly unfair that you can't go in there. But hurting yourself on the floor won't open the door."

Jerry knelt beside his brother, looking at Abigail with wide, uncertain eyes.

"Can we paint in the kitchen?" Jerry whispered.

"We absolutely can," Abigail smiled.

Upstairs, Pedro sat in his office, watching the security feed. He had his hand hovered over the intercom, ready to intervene, ready to fire her for letting his son cry. But as he watched Ben slowly sit up and take Abigail's hand, Pedro pulled his hand back. He felt a sharp pang in his chest, realizing he wouldn't have known how to calm his own son.
