Chapter 10 - The Locked Door

|

The peace in Breakers Mansion was fragile, and it shattered on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

Abigail had been looking for extra blankets in the east wing. She had taken a wrong turn down a corridor the boys usually avoided. At the end of the hall stood heavy oak double doors, locked tight.

As she passed, she noticed a small, silver key resting precariously on the lip of a nearby decorative vase. Curiosity overcoming her strict professionalism, she picked it up. It fit perfectly into the heavy brass lock.

With a soft click, the door opened.

Abigail gasped. It wasn't just an art studio; it was a shrine.

Half-finished canvases were covered in dust sheets. Tubes of dried oil paint sat on a wooden easel. But what caught her breath were the walls. They were covered in vibrant, beautiful murals of the ocean, clearly painted for the boys when they were babies.

"What are you doing in here?"

The voice was like a whip cracking in the quiet room.

Abigail spun around. Pedro stood in the doorway, his face a mask of absolute, terrifying fury. He had returned home early, and the sight of her standing in his late wife's sanctuary sent him into a blind panic.

"Mr. Jacobs, I didn't mean to—"

"Get out," he roared, stepping into the room and grabbing her roughly by the arm.

"Pedro, you're hurting me," Abigail said, her voice steady but firm.

He let go instantly, as if her skin burned him, stepping back with his hands raised. His chest heaved as he stared at the room he had avoided for two years.

"You had no right to open this door," Pedro hissed, his voice shaking with suppressed grief. "This room is off-limits. I made that explicitly clear to the staff."

"I found the key," Abigail argued, refusing to cower. "And frankly, locking away their mother's memory is exactly why your sons feel so empty. They need to see this, Pedro. They need to know she left something beautiful behind."

"They need to move on!" Pedro shouted, the pain finally breaking through his anger.

"You mean you need to move on," Abigail corrected softly, hitting the raw nerve that held his entire empire together.
