Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Ally

The elevator shuddered as it reached the sub-basement, the doors groaning open to reveal a dimly lit, concrete corridor. The air down here was thick with dust and the low hum of massive generators. Elara stepped out cautiously, her hand instinctively drifting to the heavy steel flashlight hooked to her belt.
"You're late," a voice whispered from the shadows.
Elara whipped around, raising the flashlight like a weapon. A figure stepped into the pale yellow light—a man in a faded doctor's coat, his hair disheveled and his eyes ringed with dark circles of exhaustion.
"Julian," Elara breathed, lowering her makeshift weapon. "I didn't think you'd actually show up. Victoria has guards crawling all over the upper floors."
"I told you I'd help you bring her down," Julian replied, his voice a tense rasp. "But we have a massive problem. They've initiated Protocol Omega. The network is being wiped as we speak. If we don't get those physical drives in the next ten minutes, everything your mother died trying to expose will be gone forever."
Elara felt the blood drain from her face. "Protocol Omega? She's actually destroying her own research?"
"She’s isolating it," Julian corrected, motioning for her to follow him down a narrow side passage. "She's transferring the core data to an offshore server and burning the local copies. She took your boy to use as leverage against you, Elara. She knows you won't leak the files if she has a gun to his head."
"She already has him," Elara said, her voice cracking as the reality of the situation crashed down on her. "They took Leo. I watched them take him from under the bed."
Julian stopped in his tracks, turning to face her with a look of pure horror. "My god... Elara, I'm so sorry."

"Don't be sorry. Be fast," Elara snapped, her grief instantly morphing into a cold, hard rage. "Show me the server room. We're going to take her entire empire down tonight, and then I am going to get my son back. Even if I have to burn this entire city to the ground to do it."
Julian nodded slowly, a newfound respect in his eyes. He scanned his badge at a reinforced steel door. "Follow me. Keep quiet."
