Chapter 15 - Unlikely Allies

The rain began to fall in heavy, relentless sheets as Elara and Julian emerged from a rusted drainage pipe near the edge of the industrial district. The city above was a blur of neon lights reflecting off the wet pavement, a stark contrast to the pitch-black tunnels they had just navigated.

"We need a car," Julian gasped, leaning against a graffiti-covered brick wall to catch his breath. "We can't walk to the safe house looking like we just crawled out of a sewer. The cops will pick us up in five minutes."

Elara scanned the desolate street. Her eyes landed on a beaten-up, vintage sedan parked outside a rundown diner. "I know how to hotwire older models," she said, pulling the hood of her soaked sweatshirt over her head. "Keep watch."

Within three minutes, the engine of the sedan sputtered to life. Julian threw himself into the passenger seat as Elara slammed the car into gear, speeding away just as a police cruiser rounded the corner in the distance.

"That was too close," Julian muttered, wiping the condensation from the window. "Take the next left. The journalist's place is in the Narrows."

"Tell me about this guy," Elara demanded, keeping her eyes glued to the rain-slicked road. "If we are handing over the only copy of Victoria's files, I need to know he won't just sell us out to her."

"His name is Silas," Julian explained. "He was a lead investigative reporter for the Chronicle until he started digging into Victoria's pharmaceutical shell companies. She ruined his life. Framed him for embezzlement, destroyed his reputation, and drove his wife away. He lives for one thing now: seeing Victoria hang."

"Good," Elara said coldly. "We can use that anger."

They drove in tense silence until Julian directed her to pull into a dark, narrow alleyway behind an abandoned laundromat. They exited the car and climbed a rusted fire escape to a third-floor window. Julian knocked a complex rhythm on the glass.

A moment later, the window slid open, revealing a man with a grizzled beard, paranoid eyes, and a shotgun aimed squarely at Julian’s chest.

"Give me one good reason not to blow you to kingdom come, Julian," the man growled.

"I brought the holy grail, Silas," Julian replied softly. "I brought Victoria's omega files."
